“Can I ask you something?” I said to Katie, as we waited for our moms to pick us up. “What made you join SGC? I know you’re into studying people and stuff like that, but it’s like a total waste of time.”

“I don’t think so,” she said.

“Really? Radonski’s crazy. He’s like a total Nazi.”

“That’s what makes the group dynamic so fascinating.”

Katie had this habit every once in a while of saying something way too smart for me.

“I don’t know what a group dynamic is.”

“Well, it’s how people act when they get in a group. They tend to all act the same way. Especially if someone takes charge. Suddenly there’s one leader, and everyone else is a follower. And nobody even notices it until something changes the group dynamic.”

I thought about that for a second, until my head started to hurt.

“Like today, when you came in, it changed the group dynamic,” Katie continued. “But only for a little while. Mr. Radonski wasn’t sure how to react by having his leadership challenged, but then he realized that he could actually use it to his advantage. And we all fell into line and became his followers again.” She sighed. “Am I like totally boring you?”

I shook my head. “Just because you’re smart doesn’t mean you’re boring.”

“Thanks, Charlie Joe.”

“At least not this time,” I added.

Katie punched me in the arm, just as her mom pulled up. She hopped in the car, then she stuck her head out the window.

“By the way, there are exactly forty-six balls stuck in the net above the gym. I’ve counted them lots of times.”

Then she stuck her head back in and was gone.
